In the closing words of 1 John, written by one of Jesus’ closest followers, John explicitly states one of his main purposes for writing this letter: “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life” (5:13).
There is no better thing to be sure of. We are first and foremost studying this Bible book so that you also can share in the assurance that you are a child of God and have eternal life.
Furthermore, in this letter (as well as his Gospel account), John declares not only that life is in Christ (John 1:4; 1 John 5:11–12), but that He Himself is the life (John 11:25; 14:6; 1 John 5:20). John wants his readers to have fellowship with Jesus and know Him intimately and personally, sharing in a close relationship likened to that of a marriage.
We are studying this book so that you might know Jesus personally, experiencing the fullness of His life and joy.
This letter speaks to any person at any point in their faith. It is both basic and deeply profound, encouraging and convicting. John at once spells out the most pure and basic description of what true Christian faith is and brings forceful exhortations to people who have been walking with Jesus for many years. No matter where you are in your faith journey, God has a message for you through this study.
We pray you are richly blessed and built up as you embark on this study of God's word.
