Paul, (an apostle of Jesus and the author of this letter) is really upset as he is writing to the church in Galatia. Why? Because some people are changing the greatest message the world has ever known: the gospel (which means good news) of God's grace.

The gospel tells us that we are saved -- made right with God, adopted into His family, and brought into close relationship with Him -- by God's grace as a gift when we put our trust in Jesus. That means that we are
not saved by following all the rules really well or being the best person we can be. Sure God wants us to be good people, but we can never be good enough on our own.

The false teachers that Paul is really upset with are changing the message of the gospel to say -- "sure you need to trust in Jesus, but you also need to follow all of these rules if you want to be right with God and a true follower of His." "No no no", says Paul. That is not the gospel! Our salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, not by our good works. And you know the funny thing? When we put our trust in Jesus, He gives us a new heart and the power of His Spirit to help us follow His ways far better than anyone could on their own. He sets us free from our sin and gives us a great, new life in Him, full of love and joy.
