Galatians is arguably Paul’s most fiery letter in the New Testament. His holy angst is a result of teachers who are distorting the gospel and leading followers of Jesus astray. Paul pleads with his audience – Don’t buy the false teachers formula that:
Jesus + works = right standing with God (and elevated Christians status).
Don’t fall for even the slightest distortion of the gospel that co-opts it into no gospel at all. There is not one single work we can add to the gospel or our salvation that makes it any more sure or complete, or that makes us any more forgiven or loved by God. The way of the world is to achieve, but the way of the gospel is to receive. How quick we are to resort to an achievement mindset with God and his glorious gospel. As Paul says in Galatians 3:2-3: “Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” (NLT)
When we stop trying to become perfect by our own human effort, and start living connected to our loving Father in the power of the Spirit, we will experience new heights of freedom, abundant life, and transformation from the inside out.
Our greatest prayer for you as you embark on this study is that the gospel of God's grace would take firm root in your heart and that the eyes of your heart would be enlightened to the indescribable power and freedom that are yours in Christ. May you encounter God in a way that leaves you forever changed.
